On the train to Machu Picchu

There are several ways to get to Machu Picchu from Cuzco. They all first take you to Aguas Calientas, then you take a bus for about 20 minutes that zig-zags up the mountain to the Lost City.

But the most amazing way to get TO Aguas is to take the Hiram Bignham train, that is run by the Orient Express people.
As my sister said, This isn't Amtrack:

It is a very nice train, and we had a four-top booth all to ourselves.

The conductor was kind enough to take our photo,

and of course, we took one ourselves.

But part of the appeal of the train is the great bar car, where there is a back platform open to the elements, and that allows you to just relax and watch the scenery go by for the roughly four hour trip:

There was a lot of this:

and we crossed the Urubomba river several times.

As we started getting closer to Machu Picchu, we did start to see snow capped mountains

But then we had to eat.

As per usual, I remembered to take a photo of the appetizer, but got absorbed by eating the rest of the food.

So this will have to do. Smoked Andean River Trout:

When we got to the top of the mountain, I took a photo back down to the train:

I think it was about 1,600' down.

An interesting trip.
